What is the Loan Prepayment Calculator?

Paying extra toward a loan does something disproportionate. The additional amount comes off the principal directly, and since all future interest is charged on the balance, removing principal today removes every future interest charge that balance would have generated.

This calculator shows the effect of that decision: what an extra payment does to the interest you will pay and the time left on the loan, so you can weigh prepayment against the other things the same money could do.

What each input means

Loan amount
The outstanding loan balance as it stands now, not the amount originally borrowed.
Annual interest rate
The current rate on the loan. On a floating-rate loan, use the rate applying today.
Loan tenure
The remaining term in years, counted from now rather than from when the loan started.
Prepayment each month
The extra amount you pay every month on top of the EMI. The result shows the months and interest it saves compared with the loan as it stands.

How this calculation works

Interest is charged each period on the outstanding balance. A prepayment reduces that balance immediately, so every subsequent interest calculation is made on a smaller number. The saving is not the prepayment amount — it is all the interest that amount would have accrued over the remaining term.

This is why timing dominates. The same sum prepaid in year two of a twenty-year loan saves far more than in year fifteen, because it removes interest over eighteen remaining years rather than five.

Formula: EMI = P × r × (1+r)ⁿ ÷ ((1+r)ⁿ − 1)

Getting the most out of the result

  • Ask the lender to reduce the tenure rather than the instalment. Keeping the payment level and shortening the term captures most of the benefit.
  • Clear the highest-rate debt first. A prepayment saves you exactly the rate on that loan, so the expensive one wins.
  • Confirm any prepayment charge before paying. A percentage fee on the amount prepaid can absorb much of the saving on a short remaining term.
  • Keep your emergency fund intact. Money put into a loan is difficult to retrieve, and being forced to re-borrow at a higher rate defeats the purpose.
  • Compare the loan rate with what the same money would earn elsewhere after tax. Prepaying is a guaranteed, risk-free return equal to the loan rate.

Common mistakes to avoid

The most common mistake is prepaying and then accepting a reduced instalment, which returns much of the saving to the lender by leaving the term unchanged. People also prepay a low-rate secured loan while carrying a high-rate balance elsewhere, which is backwards. Others empty their savings into a prepayment and are forced into expensive borrowing weeks later when something breaks. A smaller but recurring error is prepaying without confirming the lender applies it to principal rather than holding it against future instalments.

Frequently asked questions

Should I reduce my EMI or my tenure after prepaying?

Reducing tenure saves considerably more interest, because the balance is cleared sooner. Reducing the EMI helps monthly cash flow but leaves the loan running its original length. Unless you need the monthly relief, choose tenure.

When is prepayment most effective?

Early in the loan, when the outstanding balance is at its largest and the greatest number of future interest charges can be eliminated. The benefit shrinks steadily as the loan matures.

Is prepaying better than investing the money?

Prepaying earns you a certain, risk-free return equal to your loan rate. An investment might beat that, but not with certainty. The higher your loan rate, the harder it is to justify investing instead.

Will I be charged for prepaying?

It depends on the loan and jurisdiction. Floating-rate housing loans to individuals are often exempt from foreclosure charges, while fixed-rate and business loans more commonly carry them. Confirm with your lender before paying.

Do many small prepayments work as well as one large one?

Yes, and often better in practice, because each one reduces the balance from the moment it is made. Regular small prepayments are also easier to sustain than waiting to accumulate a lump sum.

Does prepaying affect my credit score?

Clearing debt is generally viewed positively. Closing a long-standing account can slightly shorten your average account age, but the reduction in outstanding debt usually outweighs that.

Should I prepay if my loan is nearly finished?

The interest saving is small at that stage, since little balance remains to accrue interest. Clearing it can still be worthwhile for simplicity, but the financial case is much weaker than prepaying early.
